IP66 is useful shorthand when a vehicle-mounted computer will live around dust, spray and routine cleaning. It is not a promise that every installation can be submerged or that a sealed housing will solve every environmental problem. The rating describes protection of the enclosure under defined test conditions. The vehicle builder still has to protect connectors, cable entries, brackets and the display surface.
An IP66 vehicle mounted computer is designed around two claims: dust must not enter in a harmful quantity, and powerful water jets from specified directions must not damage the enclosure. For a warehouse truck, agricultural machine, utility vehicle or outdoor service fleet, that distinction helps the team ask better questions before choosing a waterproof vehicle mounted computer.

What IP66 actually tells a buyer
The first digit: dust protection
The first digit in IP66 concerns solid particles. A 6 indicates a dust-tight enclosure in the applicable test. That is valuable where fine dust could reach a circuit board, fan, connector or touch assembly. It does not mean that dust cannot collect on the outside, nor does it remove the need to clean the mounting area and inspect cable damage.
The second digit: water jets
The second 6 covers protection against powerful water jets under the standard test arrangement. This is different from continuous immersion. If an operator uses a pressure washer, the nozzle distance, spray angle, water temperature and cleaning chemicals can exceed the conditions used for the rating. A maintenance procedure should state where the jet may be aimed and where it must not be aimed.
An enclosure rating is not a system rating
A terminal may leave the factory with a tested housing, while the installed vehicle adds a bracket, external antenna, USB service lead or custom harness. Each opening can change the protection level. Ask whether the quoted IP66 vehicle mounted computer is rated as a complete product, which covers are fitted during the test, and which accessories are approved for production.
Where IP66 matters in daily vehicle work
In agriculture, dust, fertilizer residue and rain can reach the cab or open operator station. Construction machines add concrete dust, vibration and washdown. Warehouse and yard vehicles may move between a dry building and a wet loading area. Utility fleets often clean equipment at the end of a shift. In each case, the computer needs the right environmental margin, but it also needs a mounting position that avoids direct impact and standing water.
Think about the full duty cycle. A terminal that is dry during operation may still see condensation when a warm vehicle is parked outside. A unit that survives a spray test may still suffer if water sits behind a connector after cleaning. Record the cleaning method, storage conditions and seasonal temperature range with the equipment specification.
Integration checks before selecting an IP66 terminal
| Area | Question to ask | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Ports | Which connectors are exposed during operation? | Pinout, sealing caps and approved cable set |
| Mounting | Can water or dust collect behind the bracket? | Installation drawing and drainage plan |
| Cleaning | What pressure, angle and chemical are used? | Work instruction and inspection interval |
| Power | Does the vehicle supply remain stable during cranking? | Voltage profile and protection requirements |

PDS vehicle computer options
PDS offers rugged vehicle computers and terminals for agriculture, construction, mining, logistics and public transport. Product families such as the T8 8-inch vehicle computer, T10 10-inch vehicle computer and T12 12-inch vehicle-mounted computer can be reviewed by screen size, operating system, interfaces and protection options. Confirm the exact IP66 status, connector arrangement and mounting kit for the quoted revision.
An Android vehicle mounted computer may simplify application deployment, while Linux can suit an embedded control architecture. Neither operating system changes the environmental limits of the enclosure. Ask PDS to map the software, display, GNSS, CAN, serial, camera and 4G requirements to one tested configuration before a purchase order is released.
FAQs
Does IP66 mean the computer can be submerged?
No. IP66 addresses dust and powerful water jets under defined conditions. It is not an immersion rating. Use the supplier's approved installation and cleaning instructions.
Can I use any cable with an IP66 vehicle mounted computer?
No. A cable, gland or open service connector can reduce the protection of the installed assembly. Confirm the approved cable and sealing method for the exact model.
Is IP66 enough for an outdoor fleet?
It may be one part of the solution. Review temperature, vibration, sunlight, voltage, mounting, cleaning and service access as well as ingress protection.
